0x800700002  backup is looking for folders that don't exist
This is a new HP PC with Windows 7 Ultimate, backing up to an external HD. External HD came with HP's SimpleSave backup software, the software is only on the external HD it is not on the PC. I get this error when I backup within Windows. I don't get it if I use the SimpleSave program. Backup completed but some files were skipped Details: Backup Time 7/22/2010 11:05am Backup location: HP SimpleSave (K:) Error code: 0x8100002F View Skipped Files Backup encountered a problem while backing up file C:\Users\Administrator.WORKGROUP\Contacts. Error:(The system cannot find the file specified. (0x80070002)) Backup encountered a problem while backing up file C:\Users\Administrator.WORKGROUP\Searches. Error:(The system cannot find the file specified. (0x80070002)) I have tried to follow all of the suggestions regarding unchecking these folder/files, In the tree view the Administrator.WORKGROUP is already unchecked including all folders beneath. What is interesting is the folders \Contacts and \Searches don't even exist under C:\Users\Administrator.WORKGROUP\ (not sure why I even have a Adminstrator.WORKGROUP?) I have three sub-folders under users\ \Admistrator \Admistrator.WORKGROUPS \David41 The \Contacts and \Searches sub-folders only appear under \David41 1. Can I Uninstall or Delete Administrator.WORKGROUP? Or will this create other path problems? 2. Should I copy the \Contacts & \Searches folders and paste them under Administrator.WORKGROUP? Would this create other problems? 3. Other options?

Generally, the error 0x800700002 may occur if there are duplicate accounts on the computer. Since you have checked the profilelist entry already. To fix your issue, it's better to make a backup in the Build-in account. 1. Click Start, and then type cmd in the “Start Search” box . 2. In the search results list, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as Administrator. 3. When you are prompted by User Account Control, click Continue. 4. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER. net user administrator /active:yes 5. Type exit, and then press ENTER. 6. Log off the current user account and log on the build-in account. 7 Try to make a backup again.

First I would do the system file checker just to make sure everything is in order sfc /scannow from the command line. If no errors found then if possible make a Restore Point before doing this. If not, then for each key on LEFT in RegEdit highlight it and then click FILE above and EXPORT the key before changing it. If you make a mistake find the Key you changed and Right Click on it and MERGE and you will be right back where you were. (These keys are not critical so you can do that, in other circumstances a change to the Registry in other areas is not so easy to reverse.) How to Create a System Restore Point in Vista http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/76332-system-restore-point-create.html How to Do a System Restore in Vista http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/76905-system-restore-how.html This problem is due to one or more profiles under : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList with missing ProfileImagePath. To check whether you have missing profiles: 1. Open regedit, navigate to the above registry key. (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList). Expand the list 2. Click on each of the profiles listed. The first 3 profiles should have ProfileImagePath value of %SystemRoot%\System32\Config\SystemProfile, %SystemRoot%\ServiceProfiles\LocalService, and %SystemRoot%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService respectively. 3. Starting from the 4th profile, the ProfileImagePath should contain path to the user profiles on your machine, such as C:\users\Brian 4. If one or more of the profile has no profile image, then you have missing profiles. To work around this, delete the profile in question (Caution: The registry contains critical settings that are necessary for your system to function properly. Take extra caution while making changes) 1. First, export the ProfileList key for safekeeping. (Right click on the key, choose “Export”, and save it to the desktop.) 2. Right click on the profile in question, choose delete. 3. Try backup again. Hope this helps. Make sure the external drive is good and doesn't have corruption, as that will kill the backup. That's probably why you had problems with the Vista backup.

I've been encountering the same stuff. For me, it looks like it tries to match backed up folders with existing ones and just informs you that you've deleted the folder it previously backed up in a cryptic and crappy way. And it really seems to be as simple as that. No need to check all that ____ everyone's suggesting.
